For the last two weeks of my trip, I stayed with my dear friend Kayla in Toronto. Kayla attends an art school, and so for the two weeks I was immersed in the hipster, artistic side of the city.
And so it made sense, in my eighteen year old identity searching head at least, to make the most of that lifestyle and get a tattoo.
I know. Me. A tattoo. I’m not exactly hardcore, in any sense of the word, so tattoos aren’t exactly the first thing you would associate with my image. But still, last week I found myself being inked by a heavily tattooed man named Mike.
Don’t get me wrong, this wasn’t some spur of the moment decision. I’d been thinking about getting this tattoo for over a year. But I was in the parlour getting my nose pierced (another story for another day) and just decided, well, there’s no time like the present.
In hindsight, I probably should have informed my parents of my decision, but what’s done is done, I suppose.
My tattoo is a nod to both Harry Potter, and the fact that I survived the HSC and got into my dream university course. It says “All Was Well” in Lumos script on my left wrist. I love it, but sometimes I glance down and can’t believe I actually went through with it.
My mother’s initial reaction was something like this, but slowly she’s coming around to the fact that it’s there forever.
I think part of the reason I was so keen to turn my tattoo dreams into a reality was because I have always been this wallflower who never did anything unexpected. I am heaped into the corner of “quiet (yet opinionated) nerds” and left to devour my books on Saturday nights. But sometimes, you have to try something new. And so I decided to beat even the most expected of my classmates, and become one of the very first to be permanently inked. Of course, it’s a nerdy reference, but I feel that it suits the more confident me that’s hiding behind all the social anxiety.
I have promised my mum that this is the first and last tattoo that will be a part of my body, but I’m a sucker for book references, so don’t tell her about this pinterest board.
