Book Review: The Violet Eden Chapters

I was sent the first book in The Violet Eden Chapters, Embrace, last year. I chucked it on my pile of books to read (which is about as tall as I am, though that might not be saying much) and didn’t think much of it, as sadly often happens to many books I get sent as I just don’t have time to read all of them (I really wish I did). A few months later, however, I got sent the sequel, Enticed, which made me slightly more interested, but still, it got chucked on the pile. The blurb sounded very fantasy and there’s only so much of that you can take. Last month, however, I was sent the third book in the series, Emblaze, and decided enough was enough and I had to start reading. I ended up reading Embrace in one night, it was that addictive.

The series begins with Violet Eden on the eve of her seventeenth birthday. She thinks she has a pretty normal life, living with her often-absent father after the death of her mother soon after her birth, attending school, and hanging out with her best friend, Steph. She’s hardcore crushing on her training buddy turned close friend Lincoln, and thinks something might be about to happen. But then weird things start happening, and charismatic Phoenix appears, and soon nothing is what it seems and Violet begins to question everything. It turns out she’s a Grigori – a half angel, half human warrior destined to fight ‘exiles’, or fallen angels. As Embrace turns into Enticed, Violet has some hard decisions to make, and a lot to learn. The journey doesn’t get any easier as we head into Emblaze though, with an end of the world prophecy leading Violet and her fighting friends straight to the entrance of hell.

Besides the obvious fantasy genre of the novels, it is brilliantly romance fuelled. There’s angst, unrequited love, forbidden love, soul mates, and just general cuteness. Think Twilight, but more believable and awesome.

I love reading YA novels, but often get sick of their repetitiveness, so The Violet Eden Chapters pleasantly surprised me with their take on the current trend. I’m just disappointed I have to wait an entire year to read the fourth book!

The Violet Eden Chapters are written by Jessica Shirvington, an Aussie writer (brilliant!), and the first three are now available where all good books are sold. Check them out for an addictive Summer read!
