I downloaded Taylor Swift’s new album the other day and once again I am in love. While it’s definitely the least country of all her albums, it’s epic down to the last revenge filled lyrics (which are the parts of hers songs I enjoy the most so I’ll let you know my favourites for each song). You should be aware that I suck at reviewing songs (there goes my dream of being an entertainment editor) so read ahead at your own risk.
Speak Now – The song which gives the album it’s name is hilariously creepy. It’s about a girl who attends the wedding of an ex-boyfriend so she can stop it because he belongs with her.
Favourite lyric? And her snotty little family all dressed in pastel and she is yelling at a bridesmaid somewhere back inside a room wearing a dress shaped like a pastry.
Mean – One of the more country song on the album, Mean is bitching about someone who bitched about Taylor. Not my favourite on the album, but enjoyable nonetheless.
Favourite lyric? And I can see you years from now in a bar talking over a football game with that same big loud opinion but nobody’s listening. Washed up and ranting about the same old bitter things. Drunk and rambling on about how I can’t sing, but all you are is mean.
Dear John – If this song wasn’t six and a half minutes long I might like it more than I do, but that combined with the fact it’s just bitching about John Mayer makes it hard to sit through.
Favourite lyric? And my mother accused me of losing my mind but I swore I was fine.
Ours – I love this totally cute love song. The tune makes it hard not to dance along to as well.
Favourite lyrics? Don’t you worry you’re pretty little mind, people throw rocks at things that shine. And. And any snide remarks from my father about your tattoos will be ignored cos my heart is yours.
Haunted – The violins (?) in the intro of this sound so good and set a good tone for the rest of the song. This song is one of her more emo songs, kind of like Cold As You or Tell Me Why, but is still really catchy.
Favourite lyric? He will try to take away my pain and he just might make me smile but the whole time I was wishing he was you instead.
Sparks Fly – I have a live version of this song and it has always been one of my favourites, so I was ecstatic to hear she was releasing a studio version. I wasn’t as ecstatic when I actually heard it and she had changed a lot of the lyrics, but it’s catchiness remains.
Favourite lyric? You touch me once and it’s really something, you find I’m even better than you imagined I would be (I need to get my mind out of the gutter)
Innocent – Of course this album was bound to have a song about Kanye, but while many claim it’s overkill and stupid, I actually like it. It’s nice and slow and most of all, forgiving.
Favourite lyric? Time turns flames to embers, you’ll have new Septembers, every one of us has messed up too.
Last Kiss – I think this is my least favourite song on the album. It’s just too slow and not overly creepy or revengeful in any way. Also, she mentions the time but once again it’s not ‘2am’ it’s ‘1.58’. What’s up with that tsweezy? Couldn’t wait an extra two minutes to stick to your trademark? It’s also over six minutes long, Taylor really likes the long songs this time around.
Favourite lyric? So I’ll watch you live in pictures like I used to watch you sleep and I feel you forget me like I used to feel you breathe. And I keep up with our old friends just to ask them how you are. I hope it’s nice where you are. (Creepiest lyric of the song, so of course I had to choose it)
Long Live – I adore this song to the point of wanting it to be my graduation song. The tune is catchy, the lyrics are catchy…it’s just perfect.
Favourite lyric? I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you. (Pretty sure this is my favourite song lyric ever.)
Mine – A trademark TSweezy love song that makes you wish you were the girl in the song. I love it so much.
Favourite lyric? You were in college working part time waiting tables, left a small town never looked back. I was a flight risk with a fear of falling, wonderin’ why we bother with love if it never lasts.
Better Than Revenge – This is my favourite song on the album and is pretty much up there with You Belong With Me in being my favourite Tswizzle song ever. It doesn’t sound like something she’d normally do, it almost has a Paramore ring to it, but it’s hilarious and bitchy and omg it’s just love.
Favourite lyric? She’s not a saint and she’s not what you think, she’s an actress. She’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress. Soon she’s gonna find stealing other people’s toys on the playground won’t make you many friends. She should keep in mind, she should keep in mind there is nothing I do better than revenge. AND. She thinks I’m psycho cos I like to rhyme her name with things.
If This Was A Movie – A cute little love song about how she wishes it was a movie so her ex would come back to her. It’s really catchy, even if it is superficial to the max.
Favourite lyric? Come back, come back, come back to me like you would, you would if this was a movie, stand outside in the rain ’til I came out. (I don’t actually overly love any of the lyrics in this song, tbh).
Never Grow Up – Another favourite on the album, it’s a cute little quiet song about not wanting someone to grow up and for them to keep their innocence. Story of my life 😛
Favourite lyric? And don’t lose the way that you dance around in your pjs getting ready for school.
Superman – With a cool beat and adorable lyrics about being in love with ‘Superman’ and hoping he comes back to her. I always dance to this song.
Favourite lyric? Tall, dark and superman he puts papers in his briefcase and drives away, to save the world or go to work, it’s the same thing to me.
The Story Of Us – I challenge you to listen to this song and not dance. It’s impossible, I’m not even kidding.
Favourite lyric? Now I’m standing alone in a crowded room and we’re not speaking. And I’m dying to know is it killing you like it’s killing me. I don’t know what to say since the twist of fate when it all broke down and the story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now. Next chapter.
Enchanted – Another slowish song (yet still not really country) that gets better as it goes on. This one is six minutes as well, really, she loves the length this time.
Favourite lyric? And it was enchanting to meet you, all I can say is I was enchanted to meet you.
Back To December – An apology to an ex-boyfriend and a quick google tells me the specific ex is Taylor Lautner. Very interesting. It’s got a more country feel to it with a slow tempo and lots of strings but it’s still catchy.
It would be better if it was apologising to Joe.
Favourite lyric? I miss your tan skin, your sweet smile, so good to me, so right, and how you held me in your arms that September night, the first time you ever saw me cry. Maybe this is wishful thinking, probably mindless dreaming, if we loved again I swear I’d love you right.
Quite a long album when you think about it. I really hope she adds Australian dates to her next tour, seeing her this year was beyond amazing and I’d love to be able to go again. Gosh, the things I’d do to be able to meet her. She is definitely one of my heroes and stands with Emma Watson as my favourite female celebrity.
What did you think of the album?
