My Obsession Knows No Language Barriers

As the epic Harry Potter fan that I am, it was only expected for me to purchase the novels in French while I’m over here. I’ve only purchased the first two so far, but the remaining five will definitely end up in my possession before I leave. Yesterday I was sitting in TPE (it’s like a class where you do a project. It doesn’t really concern me as a) the presentation is in April, and b) it’s for the BAC, but I still have to work on something) waiting for an english teacher when I started flicking through a friend’s copy of The Chamber Of Secrets. I literally started laughing out loud. Of course I knew the book would be in French, but what I didn’t realise was that some of the names would be completely different. I’m only a chapter or two into the Philosopher’s Stone (à l’école des sorciers) but here are some of the names I’ve found particularly hilarious so far:

Hogwarts – Poudlard
Gryffindor (this one is kinda boring) – Gryffondor
Hufflepuff (personal favourite) – Poufsouffle
Ravenclaw – Serdaigle
Slytherin – Serpentard
Draco Malfoy – Drago Malefoy
Neville Longbottom – Neville Londubat
He Who Must Not Be Named – Celui-Dont-On-Ne-Doit-Pas-Prononcer-Le-Nom
You Know Who –Tu-Sais-Qui
Nearly Headless Nick – Nick Quasi-Sans-Tête
Snape – Rogue
Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans – Dragées Surprises De Bertie Crochue
Chocolate Frogs – Chocogrenouilles
Madam Pomfrey – Madame Pomfresh

I’m sure I’ll discover more as I continue my journey into foreign translations, so I’ll be sure to keep you posted.
But seriously, Poufsouffle? As if Hufflepuff’s weren’t already hilarious enough!
