Best Friends – Your Say

Today while I was waiting to go to sport, I was talking with some friends and said something along the lines of wanting to be “bffs with johnny depp’s kids so I could get in with him” (I’m so not creepy) and another girl walked up and said “seriously? You use the term ‘bff’?” I looked at her with confusion, and asked what she called her best friends and she replied that she avoids all terms to do with best friends, unless using them in a silly or sarcastic manner. This got me thinking. Toong and I call each other “bff eternally’s” which started as a joke after hearing the Jonas Brother’s song ‘Much Better’ which has a line “Now I’ve made some enemies and they’re all friends suddenly, bffs eternally, I’m not bitter.” When I’m talking about her to other people I often just call her ‘my best friend’ so I don’t have to explain the whole back story, and also because that’s what she is. I often refer to people as my ‘biffle’, but usually as a joke or when I’m in a silly mood.
I’ve had a few conversations about best friends in the past month or so, and they’re always quite interesting. Growing up, and maybe it was just me, but I was always under the impression that everyone had a best friend and that you told them all your secrets and were with them 24/7. In my life, I’ve had three so called ‘best friends’. My first best friend and I met at birth and are still really close, the one in the middle ended quite messily, and my third is, of course, Toong. They’ve all been widely different experiences, as I guess each relationship is. Toong and I are quite lazy. Even before I moved we’d rarely get together on weekends, preferring to talk online or text. That said, as regular readers are probably aware, we’re crazily similar and even if we are chilling watching the disney channel, it’s always good fun. She’s the best best friend ever, and hopefully it’s third time lucky, and bffs eternally stays true.
Most of my other friends don’t actually have a best friend. They have a group of close friends, but not someone who’s closer to them than anyone else, someone who they can tell anything to (that said, toong isn’t the best for deep convos :P) and know will be there no matter what. I don’t think having a best friend is the most important thing in the world (I’ve experienced first hand how terrible it is when it all goes wrong), and I also know that best friendships are nothing like what you see on tv. To me, a best friend is not who you’ve known for the longest or who you think is the coolest, and it’s definitely not something you change every few days. You don’t have to talk twenty-four seven, and you are allowed to have other friends (including friends your super close to as well. Toong and I both call quack our sub-bff [inside joke, we’re not being rude] and I have a few other friends who I’m super tight with as well. Having a best friend doesn’t mean you have to ignore everyone else). A best friend is someone who can always put a smile on your face, who is comfortable with your family (and vice versa) and who is there for you no matter what. Someone who you’d want to tell first if you got exciting news and who you’d want by your side at a time of need. Someone who’ll be there through the good, the bad and the all together silly. Where silences are comfortable, not awkward.
In my case, it’s someone I can plan future castle living with, and fangirl out, and know will understand when I swoon over Joe Walker or Bradley James. Someone who will help me find crazy fanfics to read, and laugh and not think I’m a total freak when I say I’d rather be courted and snogged than dated and kissed. Basically, she’s someone I can be my complete self around, and if that’s not the most important thing in the world, I don’t know what is.

After having these conversations, and learning about the different relationships people have, it made me curious, so I want to ask you guys a few questions. You can answer in the comments, or, if you want, you can email me here.
1. Do you have a best friend?
IF YES:
2. How long have you been best friends?
3. What do you call each other?
4. Why would you say that they’re you’re best friend?

8. Did it end badly?
9. Why did it end?
10. Are you still in touch?
BOTH:
11. How many best friends have you had in your life?

  1. Just coz no one wants to have a dnm with me! I absolutely hated the term 'bff' until we started using it. I even posted bitching about it after Much Better. And I hate when people think we're rude calling her our sub-bff.I was gonna do the answers, but it's not like I'll be telling you anything new. Unless I'm just a smartarse in them.Xoxo.. Toongen..

  2. I'm confused. In the post you say "I don't think having a best friend is the most important thing in the world" and then you say "and if that's not the most important thing in the world, I don't know what is". S do you think it ismost important or not, just wondering πŸ™‚

  3. Answers:Well I'm a twin and I guess you could say we are best friends but we never ever call each other that.We both had the same best friend in primary school (like a triple best friend thingo) but it ended once we hit high school (and went to separate ones) due to her getting angry with us over nothing on the last day of school among other incidents. Just grew apart. Only still in touch by saying happy birthday really.I think the concept of a bff is idealised in movies (I find that there is usually a group of three bff- two girls and a guy or two guys and a girl). I think a lot of people don't actually have a bff but many besties.I have had three/four bffs. But I have two currently, it is hard to describe.

  4. 1. Do you have a best friend? NoIF YES:2. How long have you been best friends?3. What do you call each other? 4. Why would you say that they're you're best friend? 5. What do you do for fun? 6. Do you honestly believe you'll stay best friends? IF NO:7. Have you previously had a best friend? Um when I was in preschool, grade 2 and grade 4 what I thought were best friends (no longer are, I do have some wonderful close friends but none of them are particularly closer to me so they're all my good friends).8. Did it end badly? No9. Why did it end? first time, when we went to school different classes and made new friends, same in yr 2 except it was more the other person making the new friends then me. Third best friend, I made new friends and didn't hang out with them as much.10. Are you still in touch? In varying degrees, two go to school, one is still my friend and the other barely talks to me but it's fine whenever we encounter each other. Third best friend lives away, but I still talk to her sometimes.BOTH:11. How many best friends have you had in your life? 3 (as stated above)12. Overall, do you think the concept of best friends is good or bad?Personally, jsut like having close friends, friends and endeavor to be friendly acquaintance with all. (unless I can't stand them)13. Do most of the people you know have a best friend? No. Most people I know just have close friends.Oh lol, didn't realise one could have such hate of the word biffle till that convo. I love randomly using it haha.

  5. 1. Do you have a best friend? NoIF NO:7. Have you previously had a best friend? yes8. Did it end badly? one best friend I had a verbal fight with.9. Why did it end? It had been coming for a while, it was actually because I finally told her how angry I was about how she cared for her pets(she had heaps and didn't care for them properly) and then she just stopped talking to me and sat with other people.10. Are you still in touch? I've added her on FB but only so I can stalk her, I've never said anything to her on there.BOTH:11. How many best friends have you had in your life? approx 812. Overall, do you think the concept of best friends is good or bad? good. Wish I had one now.13. Do most of the people you know have a best friend? 50/50.
