As I get older, more and more of my peers, and more importantly friends, are beginning to experiment with different things. I accept most of them, but the one thing that makes me want to slap them and scream “DON’T YOU DARE DO THAT” is smoking. I know it’s their body, and they can do what they want with it, but quite frankly, I don’t think I can just sit back and watch them slowly kill themselves. At school, we’re drilled with the facts about cigarettes. How they contain four thousand chemicals. How they cause, among other deadly diseases, cancer. How it’s just like burning money. But it wasn’t until I was, ironically, watching a comedy festival last week and the following ad came on that I decided everyone who smokes is a complete idiot.
(note, this is the 2008 version of the commercial. I couldn’t find the new one, but this is identical, except in the new one the end slogan is ‘You can quit then, or you can quit now’, or something)
Viewing this made me want to throw up and cry in equal amounts. I know that everyone I know who smokes must have seen this, or at least the individual ones it’s made up from, and my question to them is, how can you watch that, see what WILL happen to you, and still light up? How can you be faced with scientific proof your habit will kill you, and not quit?
I just don’t get it. How is anything about smoking fun? You don’t look cool. You waste all your money. You’re determining an early death, or at least a future of majorly premature aging. I get that it’s addictive and once you start it’s really hard to stop, but why start in the first place? Especially now, when there’s so much proof and research into just how bad it is.
It breaks my heart every time I see a pregnant lady smoking, or someone lighting up over their baby’s pram or sleeping body. Don’t they realise second hand smoke is extremely dangerous as well? And the other ad that’s on at the moment, the one where the mum is told she has lung cancer, and then has to tell her kids…Don’t these mothers think of that?
I guess it’s just a case of the age old “it won’t happen to me” and “I’m young and invincible. That stuff only happens to old people.”
Sorry, I’m ranting, but it’s just an issue I care strongly about.
If you’re reading this, and you smoke, can you do me a favour? Can you please, please, please at least look into quitting? I don’t want those awful things in that ad to happen to you. Please.
