Don’t mention the war…

Last night, I watched Pearl Harbour for the first time. It was a really good movie, but the reality of it is quite shocking. Watching the battle scenes with all the death and the destruction made me realise just how terrible war is. So many innocent lives are lost and even if the soldiers sign up for the army, the don’t deserve death. Another thing that I realised was the enemy are really just like us. If we lived in Germany, or Japan, or Italy, we would be learning that Australia was the enemy and thinking the ANZACs were evil, not the other way around. Although we may think there is, there is never a truly ‘right’ side of war. When countries are ‘picking sides’ they have a lot of things to think about. Trade relations, their economy, out of war allies… They just can’t say ‘I want to go with ….’, whatever they pick has very serious consequences. Although they might be fighting against us, they are still the same as our soldiers. Young, fit men with their entire life ahead of them. Just because their country is in the opposite trenches doesn’t mean the soldiers themselves are evil. They have an anxious family waiting at home for them, they’ve left things behind as well, they are majorly scared of dying. And I think we need to realise this more.
All I can say is I am so glad a major war is not happening at the moment. So glad I’m not waiting for news of family members on the other side of the world. So glad I don’t have to experience the heartbreak and loss first hand… And my heart goes out to those who did/do…
